Jon was one of my very best friends in high school. One of my most fond memories is of meeting Jon every morning in a little room off the 3rd floor library to listen to music. We would check out a record player, wow that was back when there were still records, and put something on... I don't really remember what we listened to, but I do remember that we talked and talked and talked...about so many things. We loved to speak French and talk about Judaism and History....We were so young....I think we thought we could save the world... Funny, we both skipped our Senior year and graduated in 1973. I think we were the first kids at Sibley who ever did that. I didn't see Jon much after we graduated, our lives followed different paths, but we both ended up living in New York City.

I really loved Jon...I always miss him.... Rest in peace, dear one...Gena Savolainen Eisenberg

Jon died in New York City on July 12, 1993 of cryptococcal meningitis complicated by AIDS.

Following his graduation with honors from Sibley, Jon graduated from Columbia University in 1980 magna cum laude and Phi Betta Kappa with degrees in English literature and philosophy.

In his obituary, his family memorialized him with these lines -

"He met the challenge of AIDS with much courage, intelligence, enthusiasm, spirituality, joy, aggressiveness, deep faith, humility and militancy. He was a very moral, caring, sensitive, creative, sought after speaker and responsible combatant in the War on AIDS."

All of these years have gone by and I never knew.  Jon was a dear friend.  I remember cutting his hair at my house (the long shag), going to movies, and talking in the music rooms at the library.  Bless him.
